New China-Chanute

The wonders of Chinese food in small town Kansas. If you are to serve Chinese food in southeast Kansas then that means buffet. I of course do not need a buffet but will self indulge. It is lunch time in Chanute. They are open. New China is closed on Mondays and I always seem to want to eat out on Mondays. There are a lot of place in Chanute closed on Mondays. I like to punish myself by going to Chanute on Mondays because I am wierd. I will try not to be biased when I write this review. My aunt used to take me out to New China to have a "girl's day, just because girls need to". I loved my aunt and really enjoyed our lunches here just talking. She died around Christmas and I miss her and our lunches. New China will always hold a place in my heart.

The first thing I want to put out is that there are two New Chinas. Not in reality but the buffet is very different from ordering off their menu. I love everything I have ordered off the menu. The buffet is another story. It is small with only about ten different entrees. You can tell it is not fresh from the look and the taste. New China is on main street in Chanute.

It is hard to see when just driving by. It is in an old main street building so it is ran down. The place is old but clean. I like clean. If you are clean and your staff is polite I can overlook mediocre food. The staff is good. They are nice and polite. They talk to the customers like they are old friends. Everyone is treated like a regular. I give New China 4 stars ****. Sorry this is short but I have ran our of words and need to go in for a refill.

Mi Tierra - Independence

Okay everybody I know it has been forever. I would love to have a good excuse but I don't. Life just took over. Also it has been expensive to eat out lately. I will be updating more in the future.

Okay for the fist post since summer!

Mi Tierra

Yes I know another Mexican resturant in Southeast Kansas. If a small town is going to have a nonchain then it seems to be Mexican around here. We do eat other things around here. Even though we are saturated with Mexican food , you need to go to Mi Tierra. I had a great experience. Mi Tierra is at 601 N. Penn in Independence in the old KFC building. Don't let that scare you away.

I graced Mi Tierra with my appearance on a Wendsday afternoon. Of course they didn't know they were waiting on an internet star :) Ha Ha. I and everyone in the business were treated like we were VIPs. The place is small but clean and bright. It was chilly inside but I think this is because the place is small so everytime someone came in so did the icy wind.

The staff was friendly and polite. My cup was always full. This may be why I liked the place so much, they were feeding my coca-cola habit. The staff doesn't speak a lot of English but the language of food prevailed. Actually it wasn't hard to communicate even though we didn't speak the same language.

The menu is very extensive. I don't think I will ever be able to eat everything on it. I went to lunch with my sis and my mom so I was able to sample 3 things!! They thought sample; I thought more like 3 meals of my own. We ordered the cheese dip. Good! Yummy! Great consistency. The salsa for the chips wan't the best. You could tell the sauce was from a bottle. The cheese dip was good thought. Oh yeah we ordered gaucomole also. I would like to say that all three of us gave this a thumbs up. I can't because I refused to share. I ate it all and would do it again. Gaucomole with mashed avacadoes and little else makes me happy.

I ordered spinach enchiladas. I know not everyone's thing but I need to eat greens. Espacially when said green are covered in white cheese. The spinach was good. Not mushy. The tortillas were white corn and very tender. All was covered in white cheese. Lots and lots and lots of cheese. In fact I took some of the cheese off. Yes I know I actually took cheese off so you know there had to be an abundance of cheese. The enchiladas could have used a little more flavor than cheese.

My sis had the Burrito California. This was a burrito with beef, beans and cheese or so the menu said. This burrito was BEEF, breaking the seams BEEF, with a small spread of beans and cheese. There was a green dipping sauce also which I have no idea what was in it but it was good. This burrito is huge and is great for all meat lovers.

My ma had VCarnitas. They were good carnitas but nothing memorable about them.

All our meals came with beans and rice. Mi Tierra's rice is interesting. Number one it has vegetables in it. I have not seen this before. It has a good flavor and the veggies in are good. I can not tell you what the flavor of these were though.

I believe Mi Tierra is good and memorable place to eat. It is clean and the staff is polite. The food is good which is of course the most important element. I give this place 41/2 stars ****1/2.
